The Naples Daily News reports on double deductibles. and suggests that state officials might be willing to give the consumer a new choice in their insurance contract: the present system versus one where one can buy a season deductible. This seems reasonable, but one must understand that the price of the season deductible will be higher than the single event deductible.
Buried in this article from a Volusia county paper is this interesting little tidbit,
A local State Farm insurance agent, who asked not to be identified, said state regulators are considering issuing an emergency order to prevent companies from imposing double deductibles.
I don't know the details of Florida insurance law, but unless there is a provision in the state law that allows the regulator to alter a contract ex-post, I'd think there would be a number of insurers who might disagree with the order. I can see, however, that insurers may choose to avoid the double deductible issue in the spirit of good customer service. Doing so, however, causes problems down the road as the insureds will come to expect it.
