Fewer applicants doesn't mean fewer lawyers, but it does mean that fewer of the best and brightest are going into rent-seeking. Opinionistas and an improving economy probably have more to do with it.

Since most things that most lawyers do can be adequately peformed by far less than the best and brightest, I think society has a lot to gain from a trend away from law schools.
On a brighter note, Martin, I hope you are willing to share some of your foibles with the world, as I hereby weird-tag you. Although Prof. Yabut was quite prolix with his Weird List, you can be as pithy as you like -- see, e.g., Pris Campbell's quickie list.
